GROWING GUIDE
Double Flower Plants: Peonies, Ranunculus, Double Tulips & More
Double flowers have extra petal rows: peonies, ranunculus, double tulips, and double roses. A November planting list for the ones that go in the ground this fall.

Double means more petals, not two seasons.
A double flower packs extra petal rows into one bloom. Peony-form ranunculus, a double tulip, and a full peony are the usual search. A plant that flowers again later in the year is reblooming, or repeat-flowering. Those words are not interchangeable. A single-flowered plant can rebloom. A double flower can bloom once.
Pick the plant, then the form on the label.
| Plant | What “double” looks like | Planting season | Expected bloom |
|---|---|---|---|
| Double peony | Many petal layers on a herbaceous peony | Fall, as a dormant division | Late spring or early summer, after establishment |
| Ranunculus | Persian buttercup, often sold peony-flowered | Fall or winter tubers in mild areas; spring after frost where winters are cold | Late spring or early summer |
| Double tulip | Extra petals on a spring bulb | Fall, with the same chill rules as other tulips | Next spring, often one main season |
| Double daffodil | Extra petal layers, still a daffodil | Fall bulb window | Next spring |
| Double rose | Extra petal rows on a rose | Whenever that rose is planted in your climate | The season on the rose label, not automatically next spring from a November bulb |
Our peony page is Krinkled White, a specific cultivar. Read that label before you assume it is a fully double bomb peony. Our shrub rose page is one garden rose. If you want extra petal rows, the word double has to be on the rose you buy. Our tulip page is Apeldoorn, a Darwin Hybrid, not a promise that every double tulip behaves the same. There is no ranunculus plant page here.
What November can still take.
Where the fall bulb window is open, double tulips and double daffodils go in with the other spring bulbs. Zones 6–8 are often in that peak month. Zones 3–5 are at the tail if you can still dig. Zones 8–10 should pre-chill tulips that need cold and keep them out of the fruit drawer. The decision page is flowers to plant now in fall. Depth and groups are in plant spring bulbs in fall.
A double herbaceous peony division also fits the local fall window. Eyes stay shallow. Dividing peonies in fall is the guide if you are splitting a clump you already grow. The RHS peony guide is the reference for that shallow planting.
Persian ranunculus is the one people most often mis-time. The RHS bedding note says to plant dormant tubers in autumn or winter, or to buy young plants in spring. The growing guide treats them as cool-season plants that dislike a wet winter in the open ground. In a cold, wet garden, spring after frost is the safer planting. Claws point down. They are not tulip bulbs, and they are not peony roots.
Support the head. Do not drown the crown.
Double peonies and double roses hold water in the petals. A stake or a grow-through ring, set while growth is short, keeps the flower out of the mud. Cutting a stem for a vase is optional. It does not replace drainage.
Ranunculus wants sun and a mix that drains. The RHS lists wet soil and deep shade as reasons they fail. A peony crown buried too deep grows leaves and few flowers. A tulip in a saucer of water rots before it can double anything. Empty the saucer.
More flower plans, single and double, are in the flowers category. A soft blush double still counts as a pastel if the color is quiet: pastel garden flowers.
Common questions
What is a double flower?+
A double flower has extra rows of petals, so the bloom looks full. It is not a plant that flowers twice. Reblooming is a different label.
Can I plant double flowers in November?+
Double tulips and many double daffodils follow the same fall bulb window as single ones. A double peony division also fits the local fall window. Persian ranunculus tubers are a fall or winter planting only where winters are mild. In a cold climate, plant those tubers in spring after frost.
Do double flowers need extra support?+
Often yes. Heavy peony and double rose heads flop after rain. A stake or a low ring put in while the plant is short is more useful than tying a fallen stem later. Drainage still matters. Extra petals do not make a wet crown safer.
