Plant Problem Quiz: Why Are My Leaves Yellow?

Yellow leaves are most often a watering problem or too little light, not an automatic lack of fertilizer. Feel the mix about 2 inches down before you pour or feed. Wet mix plus yellow leaves usually means wait. Dry mix plus wilt usually means water. This quiz names one likely cause and three next actions.

The useful diagnosis is the next action, not a Latin name for every yellow leaf. If the mix is wet 2 inches down and leaves are yellow or the plant is wilting, treat it as overwatering: do not water today, empty the saucer, and check the drainage hole. If the mix is dry at that depth and the plant is yellow or limp, water once, then set the next check with the watering calculator. If the leaves have dark spots, compare rose black spot or zucchini yellow leaves before you feed. If the room is dim and new growth is pale, move the plant or add a lamp. The indoor light guide is the light check. A pothos with yellow leaves has its own page. This quiz does not replace that page and is not a generic yellow-leaf article. Fertilizer is the wrong first step when the pot is wet or the room is dark.

Why are these leaves yellow?

Example diagnosis

Overwatering is the most likely cause. Yellow leaves with mix that is still wet 2 inches down usually mean the roots have been sitting in water. Do not water today. Do not feed a wet pot.

Three next actions for yellow leaves and wet mix:

  1. Empty the saucer and skip watering until the top 2 inches are dry.
  2. Confirm the pot has a drainage hole. A cachepot with standing water counts as no drainage.
  3. If the plant wilts while the mix is wet, use the houseplant root-rot checks before the next drink.

Tick your own symptoms, then save a watering plan.

Plant-specific pages stay in charge: pothos yellow leaves, zucchini yellow leaves, root rot, and indoor plant care. Compost diseased leaves only if your compost page allows it: compost at home.

Common questions

Should I fertilize yellow leaves first?+

Usually no. Feel the mix and check the light first. Fertilizer on a wet, dark, or root-stressed plant makes the problem worse. Feed only when the plant page says the plant is growing and the mix is draining.

What if both old and new leaves are yellow?+

Tick both, and tick wet or dry. Wet mix still points to overwatering. Dry mix points to a drink. If you cannot tell wet from dry, the quiz tells you to feel two spots before you pour.

Does this replace the pothos yellow-leaf page?+

No. A pothos still uses the pothos yellow-leaf checks. Zucchini uses the zucchini page. Roses with spots use the black-spot page. This quiz only picks the first action.

Can I save the result?+

Copy the three actions, then open the watering calculator if the cause was water. The calculator stores nothing on this website. The decision is the interval you write down.
